Food Safety Department of Kerala – Committed to Excellence in Food Safety
Introduction
In July 2009, the Government of Kerala established the Commissionerate of Food Safety under the Food Safety & Standards Act 2006. This act was introduced to unify and streamline food laws across India, encouraging self-regulation and ensuring food safety from farm to fork.

Key Objectives of the Food Safety Department
- Licensing and Registration: We issue licenses and registrations to Food Business Operators to ensure they meet the strict guidelines of the Food Safety Act and its associated rules and regulations.
- Regulation and Enforcement: Our enforcement and analytical wings work tirelessly to regulate and monitor the food industry, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Surveillance and Monitoring: We conduct regular inspections and sample analyses to prevent food adulteration and ensure transparency in food labeling and packaging.
- Education and Training: We offer education and training programs for Food Business Operators to help them adhere to Food Safety Management Systems.
- Analytical and Enforcement Wings: The Commissionerate comprises two main wings:-
- Enforcement Wing: Focuses on the enforcement of food safety laws.
- Analytical Wing: Conducts detailed analysis of food and water samples to ensure compliance with safety standards.
